UPI Lite: PIN-free payments, and how to keep the balance safe

UPI Lite lets you pay small amounts without your UPI PIN, from a small balance kept inside your UPI app. It is quick, but NPCI says the balance should be treated like cash: whoever has your unlocked phone can spend it. This guide gives the current limits, what to do if your phone is lost, a safety check, and a checklist for bank staff.

The limits today

The RBI sets the outer limits for UPI Lite, and NPCI, which runs UPI, applies them. As checked on 1 November 2026:

UPI Lite limits
WhatLimit
One paymentUp to ₹1,000
Balance in UPI Lite at any timeUp to ₹5,000
Total spent through UPI Lite in a day₹10,000
Adding moneyOnly online, with your UPI PIN
Interest on the balanceNone
Payment alertsNot always one by one in real time, but the details of every payment must reach you

A payment above ₹1,000 goes through normal UPI and needs your PIN. UPI Lite payments come out of the Lite balance, not straight from your bank account, so they do not crowd your passbook one by one. NPCI calls this an “uncluttered passbook”. Check the full history inside your UPI app.

How UPI Lite works

  1. Turn it on. Open your UPI app, choose UPI Lite and accept the terms. You need a bank account with a UPI PIN.
  2. Add money with your PIN. The money moves from your bank account into the Lite balance in that app, on that phone.
  3. Pay without a PIN. For payments up to ₹1,000, enter the amount and confirm. No PIN is asked.
  4. Top up. Add money again with your PIN, or switch on auto top-up, allowed since August 2024. It refills the balance from your bank account when it falls below a level you choose.
  5. Take it back. Use “Transfer Out” to move any amount back to your bank account and keep Lite on, or switch Lite off, which sends the whole balance back.

One more thing to know: each UPI app can have its own Lite balance, and the same bank account can feed Lite on several apps. Add up the balances in every app when you think about what a lost phone could cost.

An invented example

A screen lock and a smaller balance would have kept most of that money safe. Rafiq now keeps ₹500 in UPI Lite, and his phone locks itself.

My phone and my UPI Lite

If your phone is lost or stolen

  1. Call your bank’s 24x7 helpline from another phone. Ask them to block UPI on the lost phone and to refund your UPI Lite balance, and take a complaint number. NPCI says the bank may carry out checks before it refunds the money to your account.
  2. Block the SIM with your mobile operator, and ask for a replacement SIM on the same number.
  3. Block the handset on Sanchar Saathi (sancharsaathi.gov.in, “Block Your Lost / Stolen Mobile Handset”). Keep your police complaint details ready, because the form asks for them.
  4. If money was spent without you, report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in, and tell your bank in writing. Keep every complaint number.
  5. On your new phone, turn UPI Lite on again from scratch. NPCI says the old balance does not move to a new phone.

If my phone is lost or stolen

  1. From another phone, call the bank’s 24x7 helpline:
  2. Ask them to block UPI and refund the UPI Lite balance. Write down the complaint number.
  3. Block the SIM with the mobile operator.
  4. Block the handset on sancharsaathi.gov.in.

Money spent? Call 1930 and report at cybercrime.gov.in.

Will you get back money a thief spent?

NPCI says the user is responsible for the money in UPI Lite and should treat it like cash. Even so, the RBI’s framework for small offline-style payments brings UPI Lite under its customer-liability rules, so report at once. What you get back depends on when it happened and how the bank classifies the case:

  • Transactions up to 31 December 2026. If the fault lies neither with you nor with the bank but elsewhere in the system, and you tell the bank within three working days, your liability is zero. If you tell it within four to seven working days, your liability is capped. If the loss came from your own negligence, you bear it until you report it.
  • Transactions from 1 January 2027. For such third-party breaches the window becomes five calendar days, and the bank must reply within 45 calendar days. An individual who bears the loss may get the one-time small-value compensation (85% of a loss of up to ₹50,000, capped at ₹25,000) if the fraud was reported to the bank and to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in within five calendar days.
  • Whether a phone with no screen lock counts as your negligence is for the bank to decide under its policy. A locked phone makes your case much stronger.

Changing your phone or number

  • New phone: switch UPI Lite off on the old phone first. The balance goes back to your bank account. Then turn Lite on again on the new phone.
  • New mobile number for UPI: switch UPI Lite off before you change the number, as NPCI advises.
  • Want your money back but keep Lite? Use Transfer Out. NPCI says you can move any amount back to your bank account without switching Lite off.
  • Moving Lite to another bank account: switch off the Lite in that app first. Its balance is refunded, and then you can turn Lite on with the account you want.
  • Selling or giving away a phone: switch Lite off, then remove your UPI apps, before the phone leaves your hands.

Scams to watch for

UPI Lite is new to many people, and scammers use that.

  • “Enter your PIN to receive Lite cashback.” Receiving money never needs your PIN. In UPI Lite your PIN is asked only when you add your own money to your own Lite balance, in your own app, because you chose to.
  • “Your Lite balance is stuck, call this number.” Fake helpline numbers turn up in search results and on social media. Use the help section inside your UPI app, or the number on your bank’s .bank.in website.
  • “Install this app so we can fix UPI Lite.” A screen-sharing or remote-access app lets a stranger see and use your phone. Never install one because a caller asks you to.
  • A QR code that “activates” Lite. You switch Lite on inside your UPI app, never by scanning someone’s QR code. Read the 4 QR rules, and check a UPI ID with the UPI scammer checker before you pay.

For bank staff: the counter checklist

Use this list at the counter or in a morning huddle.

  • A customer who has lost a phone with UPI Lite on: register the complaint with the date and time, block UPI, and start the Lite refund under NPCI’s process. Tell the customer that the bank may run checks first, and how long it will take.
  • Ask whether Lite was on more than one app. Each app can hold its own Lite balance linked to the same account.
  • If money was spent, advise a report on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in at once. Record the time the customer reported, because their liability depends on it: three working days under the current rules, five calendar days from 1 January 2027.
  • Explain plainly: the Lite balance earns no interest, is like cash in the phone, and comes back to the account when Lite is switched off or through Transfer Out.
  • When a customer changes the mobile number linked to UPI at the counter, remind them to switch Lite off in the app first.
  • For older or first-time users, suggest a small balance and auto top-up off, and show them where Transfer Out is.
  • If a complaint is not resolved within 30 days, the customer can go to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in. Say so; it is part of good service.

Questions people ask

Is UPI Lite safe?

For small payments, yes. Adding money needs your UPI PIN, and a single payment cannot be more than ₹1,000. The risk is a lost or unlocked phone, because Lite payments need no PIN. Use a screen lock and keep a small balance.

How much can I pay with UPI Lite?

Up to ₹1,000 a payment and ₹10,000 a day, from a balance of up to ₹5,000 at a time, according to NPCI.

What happens to my UPI Lite balance if I lose my phone?

It does not move to a new phone. Call your bank, have UPI blocked and ask for the Lite balance to be refunded. NPCI says the bank may run checks and then refund the money to your bank account.

Does the UPI Lite balance earn interest?

No. NPCI says the UPI Lite balance earns no interest, which is one more reason to keep it small.

Can I take money out of UPI Lite?

Yes. “Transfer Out” moves any amount back to your bank account without switching Lite off. Switching Lite off sends the whole balance back.

Why don’t UPI Lite payments show in my passbook?

They are paid from the Lite balance, not straight from your account, so your bank statement shows the top-ups rather than each small payment. The RBI says the details of every payment must still reach you, though not always in real time. The full list is in your UPI app.

Does UPI Lite work without the internet?

UPI Lite payments are made through your UPI app. A separate feature, UPI Lite X, uses NFC so that you can pay where the connection is weak or missing.
